Georgia State Patrol confirms a Baker County deputy was injured in a Friday evening accident.
GSP reports that two deputies in separate vehicles were responding to an SUV crash on Highway 253 around 5:40 p.m. The first deputy spotted a grassy spot in the road and applied the vehicle's brakes. The deputy behind them did the same, however they lost control of the vehicle, veered left, went down an embankment and hit a tree head on.
Officials confirm the deputy injured was 41-year-old James Kirkland who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Kirkland was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital with a broken ankle and cuts and scrapes on his face.
