ASU Homecoming Events set for October 23-29th

Albany State University has announced that the theme for the 2011 Homecoming will be "ASU â" All for One and One for All." This year ASU alumni and friends will again paint the city blue and gold for the annual Homecoming celebration. Festivities kick off on Sunday, Oct. 23, and run through Saturday, Oct. 29. Each day activities on campus and in the city highlight ASU and its role in Southwest Georgia.

On Sunday, Oct. 23, ASU will begin its homecoming celebration with the coronation of Miss ASU in the ACAD Auditorium at 5 p.m. This event is free and will be immediately followed by a reception in the student center ballroom. Dressy attire is required for anyone attending the reception. Also on Sunday, the "Bourbon Street Block Party" will be held from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. on the Pedestrian Mall. Advance tickets for the block party are $3 and general admission is $5.

Monday, Oct. 24, ASU's Student Government Association will host the official Homecoming Kickoff from noon until 2 p.m. at the new Student Center Amphitheatre. At 7 p.m. on Monday, the Mt. Zion Praise Team, Kierra "Ki Ki" Sheard and the ASU Anointed Gospel Choir will present the Gospel Explosion at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Homecoming Fashion Show, "Who Runs the World?" will start at 10 p.m. in Sanford Hall Gymnasium. Tickets are $5 in advance for students and $7 in advance for the general public.

On Tuesday, Oct. 25, the "Ode to Mardi Gras Karaoke" event will take place in the new Student Center from noon until 2 p.m. and the Faculty and Staff Showcase will be held in Sanford Hall Gymnasium from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Both events are free. However, the Dash for Dollars event, "A Night in the French Quarters," is $3 for advanced tickets and $5 at the door. This particular event will be held in the Student Center ballroom at 8:30 p.m. and will end at 11:30 p.m.

The Homecoming celebration continues on Wednesday, Oct. 26, with the "What's Up Wednesday," breast cancer awareness event from noon until 3 p.m. at the Student Center amphitheater and the Midnight Masquerade: Skate Night Jam from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Stardust Skate Center on Ledo Road. Skating is free before 9:30 p.m. with a valid Ram I.D. and $7 after 9:30 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 27, ASU's faculty and staff will participate in "A Taste of Louisiana: Iron Chef Competition" in Sanford Hall Gymnasium from noon until 2 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 28, will get underway at 8 a.m. with the annual ASU National Alumni Association Golf Tournament at Doublegate Country Club. For more information about the golf tournament, contact Robert Lee at (229) 886-8611 or Willie L. Wingfield at (229) 432-5533.

The Homecoming convocation will be held Friday, Oct. 28, at 10 a.m. in HPER Gymnasium with ASU Alumnus Myron Williams, UPS East Region vice president of sales, as the keynote speaker. The convocation will be followed by the annual Homecoming Luncheon at noon in the L. Orene Hall Building. The ASU deans will hold a reception for ASU alumni at 5:30 p.m. Friday, in the Albany James H. Gray Sr. Civic Center.

At 7 p.m. the Downtown Merchants Association, City of Albany, Albany State University and the Albany/Dougherty Inner City Authority (ADICA) will host the annual College Town Block Party at the Veterans Amphitheater Park on Front Street in Downtown Albany. The block party concert will feature the Soul Train Music Award R&B nominated group Solo. Also performing at the concert will be Souful Soundz, The RhoD Band and Kimberly Upshaw. The College Town Block Party is free and open to the public. ASU alumni will continue celebrating with a fish fry at 9 p.m. Friday at the Hampton Inn.

The Student Activities Homecoming Concert will also be held on Friday night and feature Lloyd, Roscoe Dash and Kool Moe Dee. Advance tickets are $15 for ASU students, $20 for K-12 students and students from visiting institutions, and $25 for the general public. Tickets will be $35 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at Odyssey Records, ASU Student Life & Activities, Albany Technical College Student Activities, from any ASU Student Activity Advisory Board (SAAB) member or online at Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will start at 8 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 29, Homecoming Day activities will begin at 9 a.m. on Pine Avenue in Downtown Albany with the Homecoming Parade. At 2 p.m., the Homecoming Football Game will kickoff at the Albany Municipal Coliseum with the ASU Golden Rams facing the Benedict College Tigers. Tickets for the game are available at the ASU Business Office Cashier's window in the ACAD Building, Odyssey Records, Capitol City Bank, Connie's Corner, the Petro Store on Radium Springs Road and June Bug's Grocery on Oakridge Drive.

The Homecoming Step Show will follow the game at 7:30 p.m. in the HPER Gymnasium. The doors will open at 7 p.m. Advanced tickets for the step show are $15 and general admission is $20 and may be purchased in the Office of Student Life and Activities in the new student center.
