Chief John Proctor with the Albany Police Department announced Monday morning that APD is now officially CALEA accredited. CALEA stands for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

Chief Proctor said this is a three year process that only took APD a year and a half; he credits that to the hard work of the CALEA committee and the entire APD staff.

To be CALEA accredited there are five steps that have to be completed which are:

      1. Enrollment
      2. Self-Assessment
      3. On-Site Assessment
      4. Commission Review and Decision
      5. Maintaining Compliance and Reaccreditation

Chief Proctor said the Albany Police Department has tried to complete this accreditation process before but it was never completed and feels this is a huge accomplishment for the department and the community. Proctor says this holds them to a higher standard and not only that but it will improve their relationship with the community.
