APD arrest suspect in elderly woman's murder
Albany police arrested and charged 33-year-old Tiffany Wise for the murder of an elderly woman Sunday night.
Police say they don't know why she killed Mabel Berry, but they do say Wise planned to rob the 88-year-old. Police found Berry dead in her backyard Sunday afternoon after neighbors heard screaming and Berry's dog barking.
They say Wise's sister drove her to the Albany Police Department where she later confessed to the crime. Investigators say the two women knew each other from the Albany Rescue Mission. Berry volunteered at the Women's Center since it began in 1998 and Wise - who police say is a recovering drug addict - has lived in the shelter for over a year. Even though police say they don't know if drugs are involved, Mission Director Brother Larry Hample says he suspects the attack is drug related because he can't think of any other reason why this would happen.
"Had I got a call she passed away, we was expecting something like that. But when you get a call like this, and then on top of it find out it was somebody here that was in the ministry is beyondâ"I'd say it was devastating," said Hample.
Wise is charged with malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. To learn more about Mabel Berry and the work she did with the Albany Rescue Mission go to this link, http://www.albanyrescuemission.org
