Amerigroup supports DCSS help program with $3,000
A program at Sherwood Acres Elementary to help reduce discipline rates and increase learning is getting a boost.
Amerigroup donated $3,000 to the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support program, also known as PBIS.
The main goal of PBIS is to reduce discipline rates and increase learning.
Staff at Sherwood Acres is focused on teaching students how to be model students through character education lessons.
Officials say that in the past, this program has significantly reduced the number of office discipline referrals.
Cicily Florence with Amerigroup says "if you can get a student to be positive starting out, there's no telling what they can accomplish and they'll also have other students to become positive with as well."
Sherwood Acres Elementary School does this by rewarding students with Pawsitive Behavior Bucks.
These bucks can be used to buy different rewards including homework passes, lunch with teachers and staff or the principal and even a VIP lunch where a student can have lunch catered to the cafeteria.
