American Express promotes local shopping

Some shoppers say they prefer local shops because of the uniqe items

American Express has named Saturday Small Business Day and is encouraging holiday shoppers to hit local stores.

Julia Temples has owned her clothing store Envy for almost a decade. She says it can be difficult at times to compete with big retailers.

Temples says a lot of times her one of a kind pieces are what draw customers into her store. "It's something unique I mean if you go to the mall or other places, you're going to see that item everywhere, here we only carry 6 of each item," says Temples.

But those aren't the only benefits a small business offers. American Express says over half of the money that goes into local stores, goes back into the community; which means shopping locally, helps the area as a whole.
