Albany State bridge building winners selected

Dr. Christopher Butts and Richard Urick with Chandler Fiveash and Ryland Ramhofer, Thomas County Middle School, winners in the middle school category.

The 2014 winners of the 12th Southwest Georgia Regional Model Bridge Building Competition, held on Feb. 22 are students from Miller and Thomas counties and home-schoolers.

About 140 participants, teachers, mentors, parents and judges from the industry and members of the organizing committee watched the competition held in Sanford Gymnasium.

In the high school category, Tessa Campbell and Lindsay Brooks from Cardinal Fields home-school group won first and third place. Miller County High School won second place.

In the middle school category, Chandler Fiveash and Ryland Ramhofer of Thomas County placed first and Miller County won second and third place.

The winning bridge TMs structural efficiency [failure load divided by the mass of the bridge] in the middle school category came out to be the best since this category was introduced in 2008. It was even better than the best in the high school category said ASU Coordinator of Engineering Dr. Atin Sinha. Everyone enjoyed the event and quite a few teachers and parents mentioned that this is indeed a great thing we are doing for the community,
