Albany residents line up for the Verizon iPhone

AT&T is no longer the sole carrier of the Apple iPhone; the popular phones are now for sale at Verizon Wireless stores.

People were up and off to the Verizon Wireless store on Westover before the sun rose Thursday. People started arriving around 4 a.m. Judy Jordan says she woke up at 2 and drove 50 miles to the store in order to be one of the first to get the phone. We sat in our cars for a while because it was misty rainy when we first got here so we sat in our cars until the activity started in the store, people started coming out so we started mixing and mingling, says Jordan.

Taylor Davis was the first in line. I like the cold so it wasn TMt that bad, it TMs been very nice the Verizon people have been very helpful do, it's been a great time, says Davis.

But despite the wait outside, once they were in the store, it was only a matter of minutes before they were checked out and ready to go. Verizon Wireless District Manager Mike Boyd says their goal is to make purchasing the phone an easy and quick process. We expect the time from when we ring up an iPhone to the time you walk out the door to be about 10 minutes, says Boyd.

Folks waited hours outside the store to finally get their hands on their own iPhone but they say that wait is nothing compared to the years they've waited for Verizon to finally carry the phone. Many people chose to wait that long because they love Verizon TMs cell phone service. I TMve wanted the iPhone for a very long time because I didn't want to make the switch, I didn't like AT&T's service, so I had to stick with Verizon, says Davis.

I TMm 50 miles away with no service. I could have bought the iPhone before, but I couldn TMt use it, says Jordan.

Verizon employees have also waited for this day to come, and are ready to greet the hundreds of people expected to walk through the doors. We TMre just ready for everybody to come on in and get their iPhone, says Boyd.

And as for those who leave the store as proud iPhone owners, their wait is finally over. Folks at Verizon say they will be busy with iPhone customers, but are still available to help any customers needing assistance.

Were you one of the lucky ones to pick up a Verizon iPhone this morning? What do you think about it? Was it worth the wait?
