Albany qualifications end with unanticipated candidates

Because Jon Howard faces no opposition for Ward 1, election officials say he automatically wins

If you wanted to run for an Albany city office in November, you missed your chance: Qualifications ended at noon on Friday.

Jon Howard was the only candidate who qualified for Ward 1 candidacy. Election officials say because he faces no opposition, he is automatically the winner and will not have his name on the ballot.

There were many who came to qualifications during the week who made no announcement that they were even running.

"The one yesterday for Ward 6 Kowana McKinney, qualified to run and we had no announcement previously from her or Mr. (Jesse) Massey who qualified today (Friday) to run for mayor or neither did we have any previous announcement from the Ward 4 candidate," says Dougherty County Elections Supervisor Ginger Nickerson.

Kirk Smith, a previous Albany Mayoral candidate, withdrew his name from the running and did not attend qualifications.

Qualifying candidates include the following:

Albany Mayor
B.J. Fletcher
Dorothy Hubbard
John White
Jesse Massey

Ward 1 Candidates
Jon Howard

Ward 4 Candidates
Roger Marietta
Jason McCoy

Ward 6 Candidates
Tommie Postell
Victor Edwards
Kowana McKinney
