Albany police investigating Westwind Apartment shooting

UPDATED (2/28/14 6:40 AM):

The Albany Police Department tells FOX 31 Friday morning that the victim in this shooting is 31-year-old Shakelia Williams.

An autopsy will be performed Friday to determine the exact cause of death.


Albany police has confirmed that a woman has died after a shooting at the Westwind Apartment complex on Dawson Road.

"When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a black female approximately 30 years of age deceased in the courtyard," said Phyllis Banks, Albany Police Public Information Officer.

Albany police got a call about the shooting at the apartment complex at 4:08 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Herbert Mitchell, a neighbor, said he was making his way home when he saw police cars.

"When I get here in front of Kmart and all of a sudden there was a body lying behind my back door in Westwind Apartments," said Herbert Mitchell.

Albany police spent the afternoon questioning neighbors about what they saw.

At this time, we don't know whether they have a suspect or not.

The case is still under investigation.
