Right now Albany police are stepping up their patrols to keep residents and businesses safe during the holidays.

APD said you can expect to see more officers at this time, especially around retail areas, like the Albany Mall and Wal-Mart, along with on the city's busiest roads.

Sgt. Richard Norman said they do this every year to try to prevent robberies, shoplifting and car break-ins.

"We want everybody to be safe while they're on the roadways. We want everybody safe while they're shopping," he said. "Try to shop in groups. Try to shop earlier in the day."

Sgt. Norman said that once you've finished shopping, make sure your purchases are out of sight in your car and home, then always lock both your car and home when you leave.
