Albany Housing Authority may postpone grant application

After years of planning, the Albany Housing Authority approved a plan for the Neighborhood of Choice Grant on Tuesday evening.

The extensive plan, due to the Department of Housing and Urban Development by Saturday, focuses on revitalizing the Oaks at North Intown neighborhood through a federal grant of up to $30 million to complete the project.

Although members initially hoped to submit an application in September, they need to have additional funding in place and say they aren't there just yet.

"We hope to use the next 8 or 9 months to work very diligently at securing commitments and figuring out the different funding sources and how we can put those together so that we can have a very competitive application, said AHA Executive Director Dan McCarthy.

The 200 page plan which asks for the demolition of public housing to be turned into mixed income homes will now be reviewed by HUD who will either accept it or ask for new changes to be made.
