The Georgia Department of Labor has announced that Albany's and Southwest Georgia's unemployment rate has declined for the month of February.

Officials say that at Albany's unemployment rate declined to 9.2 percent in February, down five-tenths of a percentage point from 9.7 percent in January while Southwest Georgia's declined to 8.8 percent in February, down five-tenths of a percentage point from 9.3 percent in January.

Officials add that the rates declined because there were fewer new layoffs, which were represented by initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits.

Industries that saw a decrease in layoffs across Southwest Georgia and in Albany included construction, manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, and administrative and support services.
