A former Dougherty County Schools student is settling in as a freshman at Georgia Southern.

Chauntoria McCray grew up homeless and couldn't afford the necessities needed for her first year.

That's why the Dougherty County School System raised almost $3,000 for things like a laptop, clothes, and even luggage to send her off in style.

Marion Stevens with the Dougherty County Schools System said, "I know further down the line I've made a difference and if I can just help one child it makes me feel good, but with this one I know there was a lot of potential with her."

McCray was the salutatorian at Dougherty High School.
