According to Chris Carlisle with the Department of Natural Resources, so far this year, there have been 39 deer stand accidents in the state of Georgia.
29 of those accidents happened while the person was engaged in hunting, 10 of those were while the hunter was getting ready to hunt. There have been a total of 3 fatalities this hunting season involving deer stands as well.
Carlisle said most of the accidents occur while the hunter is entering or exiting the stands; he says during both of those times it's usually dark outside so hunters need to be aware of the surroundings and cautious at all times. Carlisle said it's not the law but he strongly reccomends using a harness if you're going to be in a deer stand.
He also said sometimes accidents happen while setting up the actual stand and it's usually because someone was trying to do it by themself, he reccomends having 2 or 3 people help you when putting these stands up.
