State panel recommends Riggins be suspended

Velvet Riggins / From File

A state panel of three people appointed by Governor Nathan Deal to review Dougherty County School Board member Velvet Riggins indictment has taken action.

Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens, Henry County School Board member Erik Charles, and Tift County School Board member Shawn Utley are the three people on the review board.

Fox 31 emailed the Governor's office about the situation and below is the statement we received from Stephanie Mayfield.

"The Review Commission determined the charges relate to and adversely affects the administration of the office of Board Member, Dougherty County Board of Education. The Review Commission recommended Ms. Riggins be suspended from office. Our office is currently considering that recommendation."

Riggins indictment is related to allegations of fraud in relation to the free and reduced school lunch program.
