Funding to reopen Albany's West Town Library will not be granted.

Dougherty County Commission's Finance Committee made a 2-1 vote denying a request by the library board to fund a reopening.

This vote means the issue will not go before the full commission for vote.

Dougherty County Library Board officials requested that the West Town Library be reopened for 40 hours a week.

Commissioner John Hayes explained his rationale for voting for the re-opening.

"Libraries are having access to the resources that are provided. It is with that in mind that I think that we really need to take a better look at this," said John Hayes, Dougherty County Commissioner.

Commissioner Hayes says communities need libraries to build a well educated work force.
