Commissioner suggests consolidating County Police, Sheriff's office

One option to cut costs includes consolidating the county police with the Sheriff's Office / File

The Dougherty County Commission is still grappling with a way to spare the residents in the unincorporated areas from paying an additional two mills in property taxes next fiscal year.

Commissioner Ewell Lyle suggested moving the Dougherty County Police Department into the same building as the sheriff's office to cut costs--anything to keep the residents from paying more.

"This is real, this is not something that would be nice that we might not have to do, it's here on us now. I think by just raising the millage rate, I don't think that solves the problem," says Lyle.

However, both Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek and Sheriff Kevin Sproul say they'd have to look at the situation to determine any cost savings.
